Last night I dreamed about the recurring house. And it was in a recurring area I've dreamed of too. I always, since high school after serious trauma, had recurring dreams of a house. In high school, they were always nightmares, where an evil person lived there and I'd try to run away. Later, I moved in, and the evil person was gone. But I lived in a small room beneath the surface and everything outside it was terrifying. In later dreams, I started slowly exploring down hallways, always too scared to go too far. Eventually I opened doors in the hallway, discovering super neat things from my past and from my family. Later, I ended up in the room furthest down the hallway. I discovered ballrooms, a kitchen, a bedroom, and a sewing room there. There was a concrete wall in the sewing room in one eventful dream, and I took an axe and hammered it until it broke open and I landed outside. There were picnic tables, and I ate sitting at one. But when I woke at that time, I was utterly terrified and in a complete panic for 3 days. Through this time in real life, I'd say I felt buried inside and I wanted to come back out. In this dream, it's like I did. Only it's like I've been scared since. I quit leaving the house and became scared. At the same time, I also experienced more serious trauma, so it could have been that instead. But I went from being social and outgoing to being very exhausted and never leaving my home. I was so scared. I'm sure it was overwhelmingly the new trauma, but it is odd it overlaps. But anyway, I continued having dreams about the house. In it, I still lived in a smaller part of the house, and I'd explore other parts in it that were dilapidated and really worn down. I'd always be in awe of how big the house was and how much potential it had. It was like a huge mansion or castle. In many recent dreams, my mom, and the monster (who she's married to and source of trauma) lived there. I'd find places to live so I'd never have to see or be around the monster. In some other dreams I'd live in an apartment that overlooked a pool or sometimes the ocean. Well, that's where I lived in this dream last night. But in the backyard of the apartment was the mansion of my recurring dreams. I moved in the mansion with a family who already lived there. I was living in a small room over in the corner. The mom came to me and suggested I move to another part of the house. She said this room was for her daughter. The family didn't seem like they wanted me gone, but also not super welcoming either, kind of neutral, though I didn't feel fully welcomed. Anyway, I moved to the other part of the house, and I couldn't believe how amazing it was. It was the neatest area the mom had in mind for me. It would be private and mine, and it had a beautiful front entrance with lots of windows. Later last night in another dream, people were visiting me at the apartment. I was showing them around, and then told them, but now I live in the house behind the apartment I've longed to live in for a really long time. I feel like it may have been my family visiting, and my mom I was telling about it all. Then later in the evening I had another dream. of being at an airport. Then I was trying to get home (I think). But oddly, we took the airplane seats from the airplane, and a female pilot was drive us down the highway in the seats, with no shelter. Like we were just in the airplane seats out in the air driving super-fast down the highway. I was trying to hold on and realized my seatbelt wasn't fastened. I worked hard to fasten it without falling out of the seat. I finally did.
Your dream is rich with symbolism and reflects various layers of your emotional journey, particularly in relation to trauma, self-discovery, acceptance, and the desire for safety.
The Recurring House: The house in your dream serves as a powerful symbol of your inner self and personal history. Recurring dreams about the same house often indicate unresolved issues or unresolved trauma. Initially, this house was a place of fear, where you encountered an evil presence, symbolizing perhaps the trauma from your past that has haunted you. Living in terror within its walls suggests feelings of being trapped or overwhelmed by your circumstances. Your evolution from nightmares to exploring the house shows a transition from fear to a journey of self-exploration, signifying your attempts to confront and understand your trauma.
Small Room and Exploration: Your earlier experiences of living in a small room beneath the surface suggest feelings of confinement and the struggle to find your identity amidst trauma. The act of exploring hallways and opening doors is indicative of your desire to uncover repressed memories and emotions related to your past and family. Finding treasures from your past within those rooms represents moments of nostalgia, healing, and self-rediscovery. However, the panic and fear you experienced after breaking down the wall indicates the difficulty and anxiety associated with confronting these hidden aspects of your self.
The Mansion as Potential: Your perception of the mansion as a vast space with untapped potential symbolizes your unaddressed needs and aspirations. This reflects a longing for growth, healing, and perhaps a deeper connection with your family and yourself. The presence of your mother and the 'monster' suggests ongoing familial dynamics that still evoke fear and discomfort. Your attempts to find ways to live in this house while avoiding the 'monster' reveals an ongoing struggle to establish boundaries in your life, particularly in contexts involving family.
Moving and Finding Your Space: In the dream where you move to a more beautiful and private part of the house, this could symbolize your inner journey toward finding comfort and a sense of self-worth. The mother figure representing choice and direction offers you a path to personal space and independence. The awe you feel about this new part of the house might be interpreted as reclaiming your agency, suggesting that despite past trauma, you are experimenting with creating positive experiences and finding your own identity in a nurturing environment.
Visiting at the Apartment: Your experience of hosting visitors at the apartment and showing them that you've moved into the house behind it may indicate a breakthrough in your self-acceptance. It could reflect your desire to share your progress with loved ones and validate your journey. The overlapping feelings of nostalgia and hope reflect a reconciliation with your past while setting sights on a more promising future.
Airport and Journey: Lastly, the airport scene is quite significant. Airports symbolize transitions and changes, often relating to a crossroads or a journey. The act of traveling in airplane seats down a highway, with the need to fasten your seatbelt, suggests a struggle for control amidst chaos. This may echo your current feelings of vulnerability and the unpredictability of your situation. It evokes a parallel between your emotional state and the challenges of navigating significant life changes, with the seatbelt representing your effort to establish safety and stability.
Overall, this dream encapsulates a profound narrative about your journey through trauma towards self-discovery and healing. It paints a picture of navigating your fears, exploring your potential, and striving for personal safety in uncertain circumstances. Continuing to recognize this evolution may help you feel more empowered in your waking life to confront the challenges you're facing.
